How has technology advances helped to increase the yields of food crops in developing countries?

Technology advances can mean using chemicals or HIV seeds to increase the yield of the crops.

  1. I can speak for India.. There was what was called a 'green revolution' which started in the late 80s' which involved using high amounts of fertilizers and better quality seeds. States like Punjab, which were among the biggest users of fertilizers and ground water for irrigation, were able to show significant increases in the quantity of harvest grown in the immediate term. However, in the long run, it has caused the level of the ground water to go down and turn brackish (i.e. unusable for irrigation) Besides the direct impact (irrigation methods, fertilizers etc.) there have been villages in india which have used technology (internet, portals) to get information weather patterns, decide sowing schedules and seed prices.   2. Look into GMO's [genetically modified organisms]. Many plants nowadays are being inserted with genes from another organism that helps it fight off disease, be resistant to drought, etc.
